"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and the prevention of disease."

Straight Talk Man to Man

You hear a lot of talk these days about women’s health issues, but what about us guys?

“Weekend Warrior Syndrome” is a common condition that men may experience at this time of year. Although not an official diagnosis, this term is given to those who, after either a relatively inactive winter season or even work week, go “all out” over the weekend, hoping to “get ‘er done” in the yard or on the playing field.

Unfortunately, most don’t stretch properly, if at all, and thus develop “weekend warrior syndrome”.  As a result, back, shoulder, elbow, hip and knee injuries are common. While it may be a gallant effort, we can regret the price of not having taken a more gradual approach.

Here are some things to consider:

1) STRETCH BEFORE ALL ACTIVITIES, EVEN THE SIMPLE ONES.
Tight hamstrings and weak abdominals make the low back particularly vulnerable. When you  stretch, don’t bounce. It won’t enable you to go any further and you may even tear muscles.

2) STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE.
As mentioned above, weak abdominals (coupled with a pot belly) can put a lot of stress on the low back. Get active and consider some dietary coaching to help reduce that pot belly too.

3) IF YOU BEGIN AN EXERCISE PROGRAM, MAKE SURE YOUR SPINE IS WORKING PROPERLY.
Activity is good, but people often neglect the skeleton that holds everything together. A flexible, properly working spine can help keep muscles in and around the back from straining during activities.

4) IF YOUR BODY IS TALKING TO YOU, DON’T IGNORE IT.
Pain, stiffness and other symptoms are your body’s way of trying to communicate with you, much like the “check engine” light on the dashboard of your car. Ignoring this can result in more costly damage down the line.

Whether you have an active vocation like a construction worker or auto mechanic, or have a desk job with little activity, we can help you feel and function better. Ask us how you can take the next step toward building a healthier life and enjoy your summer activities to the fullest.
