There is a lot of talk these days about identity theft. It is a major crime punishable by law that can cause the victim countless lost hours to restore it, and huge headaches (in the process). Another type of identity theft that I see in my office is one in which a patient notices a physical and emotional decline that robs them of who they are or used to be.

 

SCOLIOSIS IS ONE EXAMPLE OF HOW YOUR HEALTH, AND THUS YOUR IDENTITY, CAN BE ROBBED FROM WITHIN.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally. In many cases of scoliosis there is rotation or twisting of the vertebrae which can be quite painful. In addition to causing pain, the spine can become dysfunctional, resulting in difficulty carrying out such tasks as lifting.

 

What are some of the physical symptoms of scoliosis?

-Aching and/or stiffness in the neck, upper back, and/or lower back

-Burning pain between the shoulder blades

-Restrictions in bending or twisting

-Tightness across the shoulders

 
How can you tell if you might have scoliosis?

-Does one shoulder appear higher than the other when looking in the mirror?

-Do others tell you that it looks like you’re leaning to one side or tipped forward?

-Do your shoes wear unevenly?

-Does one of your pant legs seem to hang lower than the other?

Because the spine curves abnormally, the patient with scoliosis is often not very flexible, particularly as he/she ages, and there is an increased likelihood of developing arthritis as the misaligned joints wear down prematurely.
